statement in reply to a question by Col. Day: -

"On the 12th December, H.M.Vice-Consul at Canton pro= ceeded down the river in H.M.S.Moorhen to evacuated foreig from the suburbs of the city. The party was heavily fired on by Communists on the way down, but succeeded in bring= ing away without casuality 81 refugees, of whom 11 were British, 15 American and 55 German. As far as is known, no foreigners have been molested in tre course of this rising

On 13th December, it was reported by Reuter that the U.S. gunboat "Sacramento "had landed field-guns at Shameen, and that the guns had been placed in position at the Ameri- can Consulate to protect foreigners who were concentrated

there.

On 14th December no foreigners had been molested and Reuters correspondent added that" no anti-foreign feeling was visible ".

On the same day it was reported that the anti- red forces had regained control of Canton, and later that five Russians had been executed, including Hassiz, the Russian Vice-Consul.

The following appeared in the "D: ily Mail" of 20th December :-

"Messages from Canton state that the anti-red nation= alists who wrested t e city from a Bolshevik reign of ter= ror last week are indulging in an orgy of execution of all Communists, Russians and their Chinese dupes. The number of bobbed-haired Chinese girls executed has now risen to 50, bobbed hair being regarded by the Chinese as a symbol of Bolshviism. 11
